Alice Lowery

Alice Elizabeth DeGravelle Lowery, a native of New Iberia, Louisiana, and a resident of Baton Rouge, passed away on July 3, 2024, at the age of 87. She is survived by her husband John “Herb” Lowery, her daughters Mary Lowery and Rebecca Lowery Covington, her grandchildren Mary Corinne and John Covington and Sofia Lowery, her siblings Walter DeGravelle Jr. and Camille DeGravelle, her Godchildren, Eric DeGravelle and Mary Ellen Doucet, and her nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Mary Ellen “Nell” DeGravelle, and siblings, Ferdinand DeGravelle, Mary Ellen DeGravelle Krall and Willian DeGravelle.

Alice graduated from Mount Carmel Academy in New Iberia and University of Louisiana, Lafayette, (USL, at the time), where she met Herb. They married in 1959 and shared many adventures over the next 65 years. 

Alice was a teacher at heart. She loved teaching her first and second grade students to read, first in Lafayette, then in Baton Rouge. Her true calling was teaching the Rosary to schoolchildren across Baton Rouge, especially at Our Lady of Mercy School, where she was known as “The Rosary Lady.” She and her sister Mary made thousands of rosaries over their lifetimes, and the Rosary was a special bond between them. Both were founding members of Rosary Makers groups in their church parishes, and those groups continue the work today. 

Visitation will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 9, 2024, at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Baton Rouge. The recitation of the Rosary will be at 1:30 p.m. and Mass at 2 p.m. Interment at Resthaven Gardens will follow the Mass.
