Alvin Louis Guerin, Sr., passed away on Tuesday, December 24, 2024 at the age of 92. Alvin proudly served in the Korean War with the United States Army. He belonged to St. Jude Catholic Church, where he was a member of the Knights of Columbus, served as a Eucharistic minister, and as an usher. He was married for 67 years to the love of his life, Yvonne Lamotte Guerin. They married on August 28, 1953, during his brief two-week furlough from the Korean war. Alvin returned to Korea just a few days after the wedding, leaving the newlyweds unable to reunite for 18 long months. Together they had four children, Alvin Jr., Kurt, Jeffrey and Shawna. Alvin was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.
He was a master carpenter who, along with a close group of friends with various skills and talents, was able to build his own home in 1962, where he would live the remainder of his life. He also built several pieces of furniture for his children and grandchildren including beds, desks, and bookcases, which they still proudly treasure. He was always willing to help family and friends in time of need, whether it was building and repair, or financial needs. Alvin spent his working years as a master carpenter highly sought after by businesses, contractors, and friends. He spent his final 15 years before retirement, employed by the East Baton Rouge City Parish, where he supervised various construction jobs including renovations to the courthouse, the courtrooms and judge’s chambers. After retirement, he mostly enjoyed the simplicity of home life with his family.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Yvonne Lamotte Guerin; sons, Alvin Louis Guerin, Jr. and Jeffrey “Jeff” Guerin; his parents, Norman Guerin, Sr. and Mary Decuir Guerin; sister, Shirley Williams; brother, Norman Guerin, Jr.; and grandson, Ernie Burford.
He is survived by his daughter, Shawna Guerin; son, Kurt Guerin (Terrie); grandchildren, Brandon (Shonda), Brittani (Damon), Kirbie (Jessica), Kaitlin (Lino), and Bryce (Andrea); great-grandchildren, Trey Guerin, Jada Courtney, Sheldon Guerin, Kendall and Dylan Bell, Mars Guerin-Baham; sister, Jeanette Bishop; sisters-in-law, Patricia Patin Lamotte, Dora Guerin, and Barbara Franklin (Larry).
