Carol Gene Landry passed away at the age of 81 at his home in Baton Rouge on May 5, 2025.
Carol was born in Baton Rouge on June 12, 1943. He and his sister Patsy were raised by doting parents in the Dixie neighborhood. Carol and his dog Rusty were inseparable, and they had many outdoor adventures with the neighborhood kids. His family loved spending time with extended family around Louisiana, especially in Grande Isle and on Grandpa Rushing's farm in Walker. He worked odd jobs, like paperboy, bell hop, and soda jerk, while attending Istrouma High School.
At 17, he joined the Marine Corps. The four years he spent in San Diego and overseas were among the greatest of his life. He told stories for the next 60 years about his military escapades in Thailand.
After being honorably discharged, Carol returned home to Baton Rouge. He spent many years working odd jobs until he began working for EBRSO in 1981.
Carol loved working as a deputy. He worked at the parish prison until his retirement 38 years later. He drove the paddy wagon to LSU home games, and he was in charge of the GED program for inmates.
He also loved working security details at St. James Episcopal Church and Day School. The families and staff were like his extended family. He was a fixture there for nearly 30 years.
Carol was a devout Catholic. He soothed his mind and spirit with prayer, and he was grateful for receiving communion while in Our Lady of the Lake Hospital.
Carol is survived by his wife of 30 years, Tanya Johansen Landry; his children, Kelly Romagosa, Emily Landry Bueche (Amanda), Isaac Landry (Lundon), and Tessie Landry; his grandchildren, Scott McDaniel (Meghan), Jessica McDaniel (Daniel), Michael McDaniel (Jessica), and Penelope Landry; great-grandchildren, Aria, Winnie, Gabriel, and Jasper; and his nieces, Simone Buras, Adrienne Derouen and their families.
Carol was preceded in death by his parents, Ulysses and Tessie Rushing Landry; his sister, Patsy Derouen; and his son-in-law, Woody Romagosa.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 12, 2025, at St. Joseph Cathedral, 401 Main Street in Baton Rouge. A Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. with Graveside services to follow at Roselawn Memorial Park, 4045 North Street in Baton Rouge.
Carol's family would like to thank Dr. Militello and his staff, Audubon Home Health, and Audubon Hospice for their care and compassion.
Carol will be remembered for his love, kindness, and generosity. He will also be remembered for his faith, his love of nature, and his appreciation for good food.
