Felix W. Dawson, Jr.

Felix William Dawson, Jr. our loving father, grandfather, brother and son, passed away on March 18, 2024, after a short illness. Felix was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on July 31, 1946, where he lived most of his life, moving to Ascension Parish in 2010.  

Felix is a graduate of Woodlawn High School and LSU, with a B.M.E., M.M.E and Master’s plus 30.  He retired from East Baton Rouge Parish School System, where he was a band director for more than 30 years. He also taught in the Archdiocesan Band Program and the University Laboratory School.  He was an active member at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Prairieville, Knights of Columbus Council 8342 and Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree Council 2241.  In addition, he was a member of the LSU Band, the Baton Rouge Concert Band, and a former member of the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra.  Felix was recognized as East Baton Rouge Parish Teacher of the Year, East Baton Rouge Parish Band Director of the Year and State Teacher of the Year finalist.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Felix William Dawson Sr. and Enola ("Cassine") Daigre Dawson; and two grandsons, Connor and Trace Riley.  He is survived by his two brothers Jeffrey and Gregory Dawson; daughters Susan Dawson, and Kara Samson and her husband, Jason; grandchildren Kendall Samson, Brennan Samson, Brogan Riley and Sofia Riley; as well as numerous cousins and special friend, Cathy Loudon.

His family was his top priority and especially his grandchildren, whom he spent countless hours spoiling.  Felix has touched so many lives through his music whether he was teaching it or playing it.  He was a selfless man that always had a smile on his face and was willing to help anyone.  He will be truly missed here on earth.

It was Felix’s request for a private funeral Mass and graveside service with invited family members only.

Friends and family are invited to a reception to celebrate the life of Felix W. Dawson, Jr. on Monday, March 25, 2024, from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at St. John Evangelist Catholic Church, 15208 Highway 73 in Prairieville, where we can share memories of this great man.
