George Hatzis

May 10, 1936 — January 23, 2021

George Hatzis, age 84, a resident of Baton Rouge, passed away peacefully at his home on January 23rd, 2021. George was born on May 10th, 1936 on the small island of Samos, Greece. In his youth he was a competitive swimmer, diver and soccer player. His country would soon face economic devastation during WWII and the ensuing Greek Civil War, prompting his parents to send him to the United States. A very young George Hatzis boarded a ship and sailed across an ocean to live with an uncle he barely knew in New York City. He soon learned English, became a US citizen and worked in the Manhattan restaurant and night club scene during the 1950’s and 60’s.  He worked in the world famous Stork Club and had a small role in a major motion picture as a result. George returned to his homeland where he met and married the love of his life, Marika Manitary. She would be at his side until the day of his death nearly six decades later. George brought his new bride back to New York City where they soon raised a family and lived happily for many years. George also served honorably in the US Army during the Korean War before learning the appliance repair trade that would provide for him and his family. George loved life and lived it to the fullest. He never met a stranger and made friends across the globe who will miss him dearly. George is survived by his wife Marika, sons Emmanuel, Nickos (daughter in law Heather), daughter in law Holly Ann, grandchildren Christopher, Hollan, William, Mila, and Alexandra. He is preceded in death by his parents Emmanuel and Androniki, sister Aphroula and brother Steve. Visitation will take place at Resthaven on January 28th from 8:30 am until services at 10am. Burial will follow at Resthaven.
