Gwendolyn Harris Roberts

Gwen peacefully passed away on February 13, 2024. She was 88 years old, a native of Denham Springs, LA and resident of Baton Rouge, LA. She graduated DS High School in 1953 and Southeastern University in 1957, where she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education. She taught for 27 years and retired from the Ascension Parish School System in 1998.

Gwen lived a long and eventful life. In high school and college she competed in rodeos, barrel racing horses throughout the south, fulfilling her dream of becoming a cowgirl. It was at a rodeo she met her future husband, Joe, a steer wrestler and rodeo clown. The two rodeo competitors married in 1958.

Gwen loved fishing, gardening, birding, reading, drawing, painting and camping. She loved to spend time with her kids, grandchildren, and great grandchildren at her camps at the Head of Island and Grand Isle.

She was a member of of The Terrebone Bird Club, and was a LA Master Gardener. She was also a member of the Audubon Society, the Nature Conservatory Society, and the National Wildlife Federation.

She is proceeded in death by her husband, Joseph Roberts, Jr., her parents, Louis Brannon Harris and Mary Alice Johnson Harris. Gwen is survived by: brothers, Charles “Charlie” Harris and Roger “Rocky” Harris, Children; Janet Smith & Bujeaux, David & Lisa Roberts, Claire & Troy Donaldson, and Richard & Melinda Roberts, grandchildren; Kindra Rieman, Chase Donaldson, Abbie Woodward, Jamie Lynn Moore, Lane Roberts, Justin Smith, Colleen Roberts, Ethan Roberts & Blake Roberts: 8 great grandchildren & 3 great-great grand children.

Celebration of Life will be Saturday, February 24th from 12:00-2:00 at 44304 Hwy 42, Prairieviile, LA, 70769. RSVP Jamie via text at (225)931-4450.
