James Kelly

January 28, 1943 — June 8, 2025

It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of James Alvin Kelly on June 8, 2025, following a brief illness.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, William and Marguerite Kelly; his brothers A.J., William Jr., and Robert Kelly Sr.; his sister, Katherine Dubroc, his nephew, René Peytral, his sister-in-law Reneé Kelly, and his brother-in-law Vincent Dubroc.

He leaves behind his beloved wife of 25 years, Dorothy Lumpkin Kelly; his sisters, Marilyn Kelly Melancon and Margie Kelly Peytral; sisters-in-law Gloria Kelly and Lois Kelly, the widows of William Jr and A.J Kelly.; along with many nieces and nephews and many cherished friends.

Born in New Orleans in 1943, Jim was a proud Army veteran and a 1966 graduate of L.S.U, where he earned his degree in electrical engineering. He made New Orleans his home until 2005, when he retired and relocated to Baton Rouge.

Jim will be remembered for his boundless generosity, neighborly kindness, and unwavering sense of integrity. He approached life with curiosity, a deep respect for precision—especially in all things mechanical or scientific—and a strong sense of how things should be done. He read the newspaper daily and voted in every election, believing deeply in the importance of being an informed and active citizen.

To know Jim was to love him. He brought light and loyalty to every space he occupied, and his presence will be deeply missed.

As per his wishes, there will be no formal burial service. A Celebration of Life will be planned in the months to come, where we will gather to honor the remarkable man he was.
