Dr. James “Jim” John Lackett passed away on Sunday, May 17, 2026, in Baton Rouge, La.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, George and Emma Lackett; his brothers and sister, Anthony, Paul “Al,” William “Bill,” George “Chub,” and Alice; and his son, James “Jim” John Lackett II.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Noreen; his children, John (Eryn), Kelli (Mark), Jill (Steve), Chris and Casey; and his grandchildren, Zoe, Eleanor, Zachary and Mason.
Born on May 2, 1941, Jim was raised in Freehold, N.J., and lived in Baton Rouge for the past 55 years. He earned a B.S. from Kansas State University and a M.S. and Ph.D. in Entomology from the University of Wyoming.
A specialist in honeybees, he worked as an entomologist for the USDA in Laramie, Wyo., and Baton Rouge. Later, he was a business owner, selling honey and firewood and renting real estate.
Jim was happiest when he was in a deer stand, hunting on the property of long-time friend, the late Dr. Clifford Comeux, Jr., rescuing stray dogs, and tending to plants. A lifelong learner, Jim particularly loved science and the natural world. Nearly every conversation with Jim included food, and he enjoyed making deer sausage with his sons and presiding over a wood-fired barbecue.
No one was a stranger to Jim. Generous to the needy, he showed curiosity toward everyone and loved to hear and tell a good story. Many will miss his infectious belly-laugh.
He relished in nicknames like “Honey Jim” and “Wood Man,” but his most important titles were “Dad” and “Grandpoppy.”
A force of nature, Jim will always be remembered. “10-4, over and out.”
A funeral service will be held at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, 2025 Stuart Ave., Baton Rouge, at 11:30 AM on Thursday, May 21, 2026. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM.
