Jill Claire Swetnam, of Baton Rouge, passed away of natural causes on June 25, 2026, at 68. She was born in Detroit, Michigan on November 13, 1957.
A gifted flutist and devoted teacher, Jill shared her love of music with audiences and students for more than four decades. She earned her bachelor's degree in music education and master's degree in music performance from LSU. For 35 years, she served as second chair flute with the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra, becoming a beloved fixture of the ensemble.
For more than 20 years, she taught and directed the bands at The Runnels School, where her greatest joy was helping young people discover their musical potential. Jill nurtured young beginners with patience and encouragement, and many stayed in touch long after leaving her classroom, a testament to a teacher who shaped not just how her students played, but who they became. She also shared her music for many years at Jefferson Baptist Church, where her flute became a cherished part of worship.
Jill is survived by her brother, Joel Swetnam, his wife, Lisa Swetnam, and her nephew, Jared Swetnam.
The family held a private burial at Resthaven Gardens of Memory.
Memorial donations may be made to the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra at brso.org.
