John Wayne Bercegeay, 74, passed away peacefully at his home on February 25, 2026, surrounded by his loving family, after a long and courageous battle with dementia. A proud native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, John was born on August 10, 1951, son of the late Evelyn Hymel and Alfred Bercegeay. He graduated from Istrouma High School in 1970 and went on to attend trade school, beginning a lifelong career in air condition and refrigeration sales. John dedicated 47 years to Acme Refrigeration, where he faithfully served as Branch Manager and built lasting relationships through his strong work ethic and integrity.
John was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He found great joy in cooking his famous jambalaya for family gatherings and special events, dancing every chance he got, and cheering on his beloved LSU Tigers. Above all, he treasured attending his grandchildren’s school programs and sporting events, always their biggest supporter.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Clarice Amedee Bercegeay; his children, Joel Bercegeay (Jill) and Kayla Bercegeay Nelson (Brian); and his five cherished grandchildren, Hayleigh Bercegeay, Luke Bercegeay, Julia Bercegeay, Avery Bercegeay, and Cooper Nelson. He is also survived by his sisters, Gail Cullota (Vince) and Gwen Holley (Remi); stepsister, Rose Simpson (Doug) and sister-in-law JoElla Foulks; brother, Mark DeBate; and stepbrother, Carey Hymel (Terri), along with many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
John was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfathers, Marion Hymel and John DeBate; his in-law, Francis and Ida Amedee; and his brothers-in-law, Darryl Amedee and Bob Foulks
