John Roderick Roy, Sr., a resident of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, peacefully passed away on May 6, 2023, surrounded by his loving family at the age of 68.
John was born in Mansura, Louisiana on November 13, 1954 to his parents, John Martin and Laura Roy. John graduated from Marksville High School in 1972 and attended Louisiana State University where he was a member of the Air Force ROTC. John married his sweetheart, Cheryl Matherne, on October 2, 1976. They were later sealed for all time and eternity in the Salt Lake City Utah Temple on November 1, 1978. John worked at Exxon Chemical Plant for over thirty (30) years working tirelessly to provide for his family and retired as a maintenance supervisor in 2010. John was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and a man of great faith and love for his fellow man. John instilled upon his children a love for Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ and taught them the importance of hard work and integrity. John was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, hunting, bird watching, guns, and knives. He loved to share his passion for the outdoors with everyone he met and teach them all he knew. He was involved in scouting for many years, with one of his proudest achievements being that all four of his sons attained the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank in the Boy Scouts of America. He loved his family passionately and enjoyed large family gatherings. John was also a member of the board of directors and vigorous advocate for NephCure, a non-profit organization squarely focused on research for cure and support for patients and families afflicted with nephrotic syndrome, FSGS, and other rare, protein-spilling kidney diseases, helping the organization to pioneer in the rare-kidney disease research and fundraising sector. John had a heart of gold and exhibited selflessness and compassion toward his family, friends and strangers. He enjoyed LSU sports, especially football and baseball.
John is survived by his loving wife, Cheryl Matherne Roy, his children, Elizabeth Jordan (Randall; children: Bradley and Sophia), Rebecca Billiot (Shawn; children: Leslie and Shawn II), John Roy, Jr. (Denise; children: Alyssa, Morgan, Austin, Kaitlyn, Sydney, Kynsley, and Addelyn), Jennifer Roy (children: Chloe and Shiloh), Joseph Roy (Katie; child: Harper), Joshua Roy (Chelsey; children: Braydon, Camden, Anthony, and Easton), and Nathan Roy (Sally; children: Christopher and Riley).
