Lenny Kappel

Dr. Leonard Charles “Lenny” Kappel passed away on Saturday, February 21, 2026, at the age of 80. He was born November 3, 1945, in New Orleans, Louisiana to Archibald Charles “AC” Kappel and Lillian Nell Boggs Kappel. After attending Jesuit High School, Lenny furthered his education at LSU and went on to receive his PhD in Animal Science from the University of Missouri. He proudly served in the United States Marine Corps Reserve and later the Louisiana Coast Guard Auxiliary, being a patriot was an important part of Lenny’s character. He retired from the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine as the Associate Professor of Animal Nutrition after 27 years. The countless students, technicians and doctors that Lenny played a vital role in their education and careers will ensure a legacy that lasts.

He is preceded in death by his parents. Lenny is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary Anne Ballard Kappel, their children Joey Kappel and his wife Irina, Jeff Kappel and his wife Kristy and Jaki Kappel; as well as his beloved grandchildren Taylor Okvianto and her husband Rey, Reagan Kappel, Anna Katherine Kappel, Charles St. Romain and Alex Kappel. He is also survived by his sister, Cissy Hulin; his brother, Bill Kappel; as well as numerous other family and friends.

Lenny enjoyed fishing, boating and spending time with his family. We will hold near the many memories that were made. We will always miss his dedication to his family, work and our fishing trips to Grand Isle.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Memorial Service at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, February 27, 2026, at Resthaven Funeral Home, 11817 Jefferson Highway in Baton Rouge. A Memorial Visitation will be held at the funeral home beginning at 1:30 p.m.
