Levenia Smith Dawsey, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away on September 21, 2025, at the age of 92. Born on February 19, 1933, in Dutchtown, Louisiana, she was the cherished daughter of the late Sulcer Jack and Lillian Bullion Smith. Levenia dedicated much of her early career as an operator at South Central Bell, where she met the love of her life, Sherwood Dawsey. After retiring, she devoted herself wholeheartedly to her family, raising her sons with love and care. A proud and devout member of St. George Catholic Church, Levenia found great joy and strength in her faith. Her family was the center of her world, and her sons meant everything to her.
Levenia is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 47 years, Sherwood Dawsey; parents, Sulcer Jack Smith and Lillian Mary Bullion; sisters, Miriam Murray, Jennie Wilborn, and Shirley Arceneaux; and brothers, Kirby Smith and Sulcer Smith II.
She is survived by her sons, Thomas Dawsey (Carla) and Darrin Dawsey (Lisa); sister, Beryle Ramsey Berteau; grandchildren, Ashley Garcia (Alexander), Courtney Dawsey, and Ryan Dawsey; and numerous treasured nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to the Hospice of Baton Rouge and Ollie Steele Burden Manor for their compassionate care during this difficult time.
In this time of remembrance, the family welcomes all who knew and loved Levenia to join them as they honor her incredible legacy. A visitation will be held at Resthaven Funeral Home, 11817 Jefferson Hwy., in Baton Rouge, on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, from 12:00 pm, until funeral services at 2:00 pm. Graveside services will follow at St. George Catholic Church Cemetery, 7808 St. George Dr., in Baton Rouge.
