Dr. Lola F. Soileau died on May 19, 2025 in Baton Rouge. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. A resident of Baton Rouge, she was born in Novice, Texas in Coleman County on October 3, 1927.
She graduated from Hardin Simmons with a major in biology and a minor in chemistry in 1948. She earned two degrees from the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, a Master’s of Religious Education in 1951 and a Bachelor’s of Sacred Music in 1955. She earned her doctorate from LSU in Education in 1981.
She held numerous positions in the East Baton Rouge Parish School system as a biology teacher and administrator. She retired from the school system in 1996. As a biology teacher, she was known for having her students conduct experiments. There is no telling how many frogs were dissected in her labs. As an administrator her attention to detail and work ethic were exemplary. She always believed in accountability for herself and others.
She will be joining her husband of 61 years, Bob Soileau, who preceded her in death; and her parents, James Dill (J.D.) Fonville, Jr. and Ruth Williams Fonville; and her sister Martha Fonville Hayes. She is survived by her two sons, Ted Alan Soileau and Robert James Soileau and his wife Denise and their son Riley; and four grandchildren, Michelle, Laura, Grayson and Julia; and two great grandchildren Caroline and Henry.
Lola lived a life of service to God, country and community. Her tireless devotion to her family will be missed. Her book on the family history, “With Coattails Flappin’ On Becoming: Journey of Faith and Hope,” is a testament to her family devotion. It is a marvelous story that will be treasured by all of us.
The family would like to thank the entire staff at Ollie Steele Burden Manor and Pinnacle Hospice for their dedication to Lola’s health and care.
