Ann Thoms

Sep 19, 1936 — Jun 19, 2026

Baton Rouge, Louisiana

Ann Thoms was born September 19, 1936 in Houston, Texas, and passed away June 19, 2026 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, at the age of 89. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, who enjoyed cooking, reading, volunteering and spending time with her family (including her dogs). Ann won a “First Lady Award” for service to Louisiana’s children in the pediatric unit of Our Lady of the Lake hospital. She collected sun art, salt cellars and McGuffy Readers, and was known for her kindness, patience, and compassion. Ann was proud of her Scottish heritage and got to travel to Scotland where she obtained her Fraser family tartan. She grew up in Galveston where she had a horse (Trigger), 3-legged dog (Waldo) and a rabbit. She met her future husband – Robert- on a blind date in the summer of 1955 at the University of Texas. They were married two years later in Corpus Christi. They had their first child (Becky) in Texas, then moved to Illinois where Heather and Eric were born. Bobs career took them to Baton Rouge, where Bryan was born. Ann earned a BS in Education at the University of Texas, followed by an MS in Education at LSU. She taught English at the Junior High level for about 10 years– mostly at St. Aloysius in Baton Rouge, while also being a full-time wife and mother. Next, Ann and Bob moved to College Station, Texas, where she continued to substitute teach until retirement. They then moved to Waveland, Mississippi where they enjoyed beach life until Katrina hit in 2005. They lost their house and decided to relocate to Baton Rouge, where Ann spent the rest of her life close to family and friends.

Ann was preceded in death by her parents, George W. Fraser and Betty May Ellis; as well as a daughter, Heather Kolakowski; a grand-daughter, Anna E. Thoms; and brother-in-law, Donny Potter.

She is survived by her husband of 69 years, Robert L. Thoms; daughter, Rebecca Lochmann (Steve); sons, Eric Thoms (Toni) and Bryan Thoms (Johnice); and sister Betty Potter. Ann’s grandchildren include Will Thoms (Aimee), Jason Lochmann (Cass), Rachel Lochmann, Ben Thoms, Melinda Thoms, Grant Burns (Brooke), Rebekah Lofton (Layton), and Joe Torres. Her great grandchildren include Grayson and Cameron Burns.

The family would like to give special thanks to the St. George Fire Department, Bridgeway Healthcare and Hospice, and Griswold Home Care. Donations in Ann’s memory would be gratefully accepted by Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center – Pediatrics Unit.
