Marilyn Jean Shearer, 74, of Baton Rouge, passed away April 21, 2021 with her family by her side.
She was born to the late John and Elizabeth Stewart in Sheffield, Alabama. Her mother passed away recently at the age of 102, and their bond was so special. Jean graduated from Sheffield High School and then St. Vincent School of Nursing in Birmingham, Alabama in 1968.
Jean and her husband, Bruce Shearer, were married for forty-nine years with most of those years spent living in Baton Rouge. She is survived by three children: Alan Shearer (Angela), of Atlanta; Jennifer Avery (Eric), of Lake Charles; and Lori Kresse (John), of New York City along with her siblings Linda Shearer (Robert), John Stewart (Beth) and Bill Stewart (Debbie). She is also survived by seven grandchildren: Olivia Shearer, Jackson Avery, Caroline Avery, Gibson Shearer, Lauren Avery, Camille Kresse and Leopold Kresse VII.
As a nurse, Jean always cared for others. She was a dedicated parishioner at St. George Catholic Church and had a strong Catholic faith. She was an avid seamstress with a passion for embroidery, she enjoyed playing cards like bridge and canasta, and she was the life of the party! Having grown up in the Muscle Shoals, Alabama area, a love for music was in her DNA. Jean was immensely proud of her family and leaves behind nothing but beautiful memories.
To honor Jean's wishes the family will celebrate her life with family and friends. Jean battled ovarian cancer for over four years and is forever grateful to those who helped her during this tough journey. A sincere thanks goes to Woman’s Hospital, M. D. Anderson, Hospice of Baton Rouge, Lowcountry Chapter SC Ovarian Cancer Foundation, OLOL Hospital and HomeInstead. The family requests that donations in support of ovarian cancer research are made in lieu of sending flowers.
