Mark Jeffrey “Jeff” Murray, 68, of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, formerly of North Adams, Massachusetts, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, July 19, 2025, from a heart attack just weeks after retiring. His sudden passing has left a deep void in the hearts of his family, friends, and the many lives he touched.
Born on February 23, 1957, to Mark and Mary Murray, Jeff grew up in North Adams before embarking on a life of learning and meaningful connection. He earned his BA degree in anthropology from the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts and went on to pursue a Master’s in Geography at LSU. His thesis research took him to Belize, where he studied Maya Indian settlements, before he returned to a career as a research associate in entomology and an instructor of geography with the LSU AgCenter.
Jeff made Baton Rouge his home for decades, building a rich and fulfilling life rooted in friendship, mentorship, and service. His work included field surveys, research grants, and mentoring students—always with a generous spirit and sharp intellect.
Though he never embraced the Louisiana climate, Jeff remained due to the deep bonds he formed. He was godfather to many of his friends’ children and was considered family by countless people in the community. Jeff was a man of quiet strength, deep loyalty, and a dry wit that endeared him to all who knew him.
Jeff’s passing is especially poignant as he had just entered retirement and was excited about returning to North Adams for his 50th reunion.
He is survived by loving cousins, extended family, and a wide circle of friends. Though he never married, he was never alone—his life was full of meaningful relationships, long conversations, and shared laughter.
A memorial gathering to honor Jeff’s memory and celebrate the many ways he enriched the lives of others will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 18, 2025, at Resthaven Funeral Home, 11817 Jefferson Highway in Baton Rouge. The family requests that friends consider coming with a story of how Jeff impacted their lives. His inurnment will be held in North Adams, Massachusetts.
