Marta Otazo Finalet passed away on Saturday, November 15, 2025, at the age of 81. She was born on November 14, 1944, in Havana, Cuba, to the late Marta Tellechea Otazo and Oscar Otazo.
After immigrating to the United States with her younger brother as part of the unaccompanied “Peter Pan” children’s exodus in 1962, Marta graduated from Louisiana State University with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. She went on to become the first female Louisiana State Trooper and built a distinguished career as a forensic scientist with the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab, where she later served as Director until her retirement. Beyond her professional achievements, Marta embraced the world with boundless enthusiasm, traveling to more than 37 countries with her husband.
Marta was a feisty spitfire whose determination and courage broke countless glass ceilings. Her legacy of strength, service, trailblazing achievement and a deep love for discovery will continue to inspire all who knew her.
She is survived by her husband, Carlos Finalet, II; her son, Carlos Finalet, III (Rickie Brock); her brother, Julio Otazo (Cuqui); niece, Virginia Otazo; and nephew, Andrew Otazo, and many dear friends and extended family. She is preceded in death by her parents.
