Martha Vaughn

June 20, 1931 — November 28, 2022

Service above self and love for all. This is the life motto of Martha Jean (McClain) Vaughn who was welcomed into the kingdom of heaven on November 28, 2022.  With her warm smile, genuine curiosity and love of people, Martha never met a stranger, and all that left consider her a friend. She loved fishing, flowers, football, wine, dogs, the beach and casino and, most of all, her family.

A long-time resident of Baton Rouge, Martha was born in Dyersburg, TN on June 20, 1931 to parents Leslie Eugene McClain and Martha Amelia Inlow.  Martha was preceded in death by her parents and husband of 46 years, Robert “Bob” Gene Vaughn. She is survived by her two children, Valerie Lewis (Lanny) of Baton Rouge, LA and Mark Vaughn (Julie) of Madison, AL; her three grandchildren – Thomas (Laura) and Matthew (Megan) Vaughn and Luke (Natalie) Lewis; her seven great-grandchildren – Grace, Molly, John and Madison Vaughn and Carter, Lucas and Bowen Lewis; and sister, Joy Nell Haynes.

Martha attended Dyersburg (TN) High School and Murray State University, where she met and later married Bob. They moved to Plaquemine, then Baton Rouge, LA where she raised her children and worked in public relations for Dow Chemical. She and Bob retired early, built homes and lived in Angel Fire, NM, Pass Christian, MS, Paris, TN and Baton Rouge.

Martha’s ashes will be scattered in her beloved Gulf of Mexico in a joyous ceremony surrounded by family at a future date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation (www.jdrf.org) or Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation (www.crohnscolitisfoundation.org), in memory of Martha Vaughn.

The family would like to thank all the caregivers and staff of Magnolia Brook Assisted Living and Bridgeway Hospice for their excellent care of Martha.
