Merval Joseph Landry, 90, of Bayou Vista, Louisiana, passed away surrounded by family on Wednesday June 4, 2025. Merval was born October 31, 1934, in Morgan City, Louisiana to Charles and Mary Grace Angeron Landry.
Merval was a self-reliant, strong-willed man with an incredible work ethic, who was very much loved by his wife, children, and grandchildren. He was quick witted with a Cajun joke, story, or tale, and with such a large personality, he left a large wake behind his boat, and his life.
He was a proud original Bayou Vista resident who believed in the importance of giving back to his community. Merval was a founder of BV Dixie Youth baseball league, parishioner of St. Bernadette Catholic Church, elected member of the St. Mary Parish School Board, a member of the Berwick High Booster Club, and owner of Merval’s Market grocery for many years. Later in life, he pursued his passion of trapping alligators, fishing, and training Chocolate Labs.
He is survived by four children, Martin Landry (Renee), Grant Landry (Karen), Keith Landry (Alison), and Joy Largent (Christopher).
Merval is also survived by nine grandchildren, Brooke Todd, April LeMaire, Taylor
Landry, Ashley Landry, Kristen Stamper, Jordan Costa, Drew Broussard, Erin
Rife, and Brian Landry; thirteen great-grandchildren; sisters, Alice Faye Person, Mary Grace Verret; brother, Jerry Landry; in-laws, Louis and Janice Ratcliff, Julie Hepler, and Frances Miller; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins.
Merval was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Leona Ann
Ratcliff; his parent; sisters, Betty Buras and Judith Rhodes; brothers, Charles, Jr, Louis, Dudley, Perry, Douglas, Dickie, Sherald, Wade, and Michael, Sr.; and his beloved best friend, Bruno.
Following the wishes of Merval and his family, there will be no services.
The family wishes to thank the dedicated staff of the Barclay House of Baton Rouge and The Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center. They also wish to extend special thanks to Dr. William Cefalu, Jr. and his nephew, Mike Landry, Jr.
