Michael D. Hector, longtime resident of New Iberia, LA, passed away on Friday, April 3, 2026, in Baton Rouge, LA, at the age of 91. He was born on August 22, 1934, in Houma, LA, to Dewey and Marjorie Hector.
Michael attended St. Joseph Seminary in Covington, LA, from 9th grade up until he graduated with an associate’s degree in history. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in history at Notre Dame Seminary. He worked for more than 30 years with the Louisiana Department of Labor until his retirement in 1994.
Michael spent a lot of his retirement traveling the world. Most enjoyably, he explored Europe, Thailand, Mexico, Guadalupe, and the Holy Land. He loved intramural sports, especially tennis, and spent his time with family and friends. Michael adored his 9 grandchildren and was very involved in their lives. He attended every school activity and extracurricular they were involved in and was a tremendous supporter of their Catholic education.
Michael was a devout catholic and was involved in many church ministries at St. Peters Catholic Church in New Iberia. He was a lector coordinator, song & music coordinator, and served on the parish council for many years.
Michael is survived by his children, Janice H. Miller (Russell), Karl Hector (Leslie), and Glenn Hector (Tina); siblings, Sybil Pfeffer, Marian Kramer (Roger), Norbert Hector (Bertha), and Clay Laine (Linda); grandchildren, Jacob Hector, Emily Hector, Nicholas Hector, Lance Hector, Elizabeth Hector, Matthew Miller (Raegan), Claire Puissegur (Logan), Emma Miller, and Julia Miller; and several nieces and nephews that he adored.
He is proceeded in death by his wife of 46 years, Shirley Hector; parents, Dewey and Marjorie Hector; siblings, Mary Salzer and Carrol Hector; and brother-in-law, Floyd Pfeffer.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, from 5:00-8:00 PM at Resthaven Funeral Home, located at 11817 Jefferson Hwy, Baton Rouge, LA 70816, with rosary to begin at 6:30 PM. Visitation will continue Wednesday, April 8, 2026, from 10:00-11:00 AM, at St. Jean Vianney Catholic Church, with funeral services to begin at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow the service at Holy Family Cemetery, at 2:00 PM, located at 2807 N Curtis Ln, New Iberia, LA 70560.
The family would like to give special thanks to Nancy with Caring Hands, Johnna and Jocelyn with Gentiva Hospice, the staff at Old Jefferson Community Care Center, and the staff at Garden View Assisted Living, for their support and care during this difficult time.
