Michael Kenneth Heltz, 74, passed away on Saturday, May 17, 2025, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He died peacefully, surrounded by his entire family, following a long journey with Parkinson’s disease.
Michael was born on June 4, 1950, in New Orleans, Louisiana. He spent his childhood in St. James Parish and was a graduate of Lutcher High School, Nicholls State University, and LSU School of Law. He also served honorably for six years in the United States Army Reserves.
Michael practiced law in St. James Parish with his firm, Kliebert & Heltz, for 42 years, until his retirement. He was a fierce advocate for his clients in their pursuit of justice, and was a man of honesty and integrity, who loved his family deeply. He instilled in his children a deep love of family, sports, and travel. He was a loyal friend to many.
His favorite title was Dad, until the birth of his first grandchild, Marshall. Thinking himself too young and too cool to be a Grandpa yet, he chose to be called Pop, and this term of endearment became his new name to all.
Michael is survived by his devoted wife of 52 years, Mary “Libby” Dicharry Heltz; his children and their spouses, Ashley Heltz Miller (Webster), Jonathan Michael Heltz (Hannah), and Jordan Oliver Heltz (Jeryn); his brother, Barry Heltz (Linda); his grandchildren, Marshall David Heltz (Kristie), Evelyn Lilith Miller, Andrew David Heltz, Samuel Joseph Heltz, Charlie Avie Heltz, Amalie Elizabeth Heltz, Lillian Isla Heltz, and Riley Marée Berry; and his great-grandchildren, Andi Jane Heltz and Warren Michael Heltz. He is also survived by numerous other relatives, wonderful neighbors, and dear friends who enriched his life.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Wilhemina Martin Heltz; brother, Brian Joseph Heltz; and sister, Mona Lynne Heltz.
Visitation will take place at St. George Catholic Church on Friday, May 23, 2025, beginning at 10:30 AM until Mass of Christian Burial at 12:00 PM. Burial to follow at St. George Catholic Church Cemetery.
The family expresses special thanks to the many wonderful caregivers who assisted Michael on his journey and became like family to us.
