Michael James Machen, a passionate geologist, outdoorsman and lifelong adventurer, passed away on Thursday, September 17, 2026, at the age of 65, doing what he cherished most, exploring the beauty of the natural world.
Born on September 22, 1960, Mike possessed insatiable curiosity about the earth from a very young age. While others saw rocks and mountains, he saw stories written in formations, waiting to be deciphered. He turned that fascination into a lifelong calling, earning his bachelor’s degrees in geology and computer science, and dedicating his career to understanding the history and structure of the planet. Family vacations often included Mike picking up rocks and sharing his wealth of knowledge with those around him.
His work as a geologist was never just a job, it was an extension of his pursuit for adventure. Mike was happiest when he was off the beaten path, whether he was offshore, in the mountains, or deep within the swamps. He inspired everyone to look a little closer at the world and never lose their sense of wonder.
He discovered a deep love for music and always kept his guitar close by. Music was a constant passion of his, and the joy it brought him touched the lives of everyone fortunate enough to hear him play.
Michael's greatest love was spending time with his children, their laughter feeding his spirit. He never met a stranger and was often most comfortable talking to those who society has forgotten or overlooked. His compassion for others ran as deep as his generosity.
Michael is survived by his children, Sydney Paige Machen Boscareno (Dominick) and Michael Tyler Machen; his former wife and dear friend, Jennifer Bernard Machen; his brother, Matt Machen (Michelle); and several nieces, cousins and close friends.
He is preceded in death by his brother, Mark Steven Machen; and his parents, James Roy Machen and Claudia Connor Machen McBride.
