Michael Stephen Wilson, 58, passed away peacefully on November 21, 2024, after a brief but courageous battle with liver cancer. Surrounded by his loving family and friends, Mike left this world with grace and dignity.
Born on September 17, 1966, in Lake Charles, Louisiana, Mike spent most of his life in Baton Rouge. From an early age, he faced significant health challenges with extraordinary strength and determination. Diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease at age eight, he defied doctors’ expectations by living more than twice as long as anticipated, inspiring all who knew him.
Mike was a successful businessman who carried on his family’s legacy in the specialty gas industry as the owner of Gulf Gases & Technologies. After the passing of his brother Chuck, Mike brought in co-owner Clay Bowman to continue the company’s growth and success, embodying his commitment to both family and business.
Mike’s love for Louisiana and its traditions shone through his passion for LSU football. A proud and devoted Tiger fan, he was one of the founding members of the legendary LSU tailgating group, KBRD. For over 25 years, Mike and his family made Touchdown Village 1 their second home during football season. Known for his warm hospitality, he ensured the tradition thrived for future generations.
Despite his health challenges, Mike embraced life with vigor. He enjoyed outdoor activities like golf, beach volleyball, skiing, and, more recently, pickleball. His love for the beach often took him to Orange Beach and other favorite seaside destinations, where he cherished time with family and friends.
Mike’s generosity and humility defined him. He had a unique ability to prioritize others' needs over his own, always stepping up to support his family in times of need. Whether helping his brothers through their illnesses, offering guidance to his nieces and nephews—who lovingly called him "Cool Uncle Mike"—or being a steady presence for his extended family, Mike’s selflessness left a lasting impact on everyone around him. Above all, his greatest devotion was to his daughter, who he ensured received a world-class education. Lauren honors his legacy as an international business lawyer in Paris, France.
Mike is survived by his beloved wife, Michelle Anselmo Wilson; his mother, Ellen F. Wilson; his daughter, Lauren P. Wilson; his brother, Joseph C. Wilson; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his father, Chapin E. Wilson; his father-in-law, Joseph A. Anselmo; and his brother, Charles E. Wilson. Their love and influence shaped Mike into the selfless, determined, and generous man he became.
Mike’s family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff at Carpenter House Hospice for their care during his final days.
A celebration of Mike’s remarkable life will be held at Resthaven Funeral Home, 11817 Jefferson Highway in Baton Rouge, on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, at 10:00 a.m., with visitation beginning at 8:30 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Mike’s honor to Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation, reflecting his lifelong resilience and commitment to helping others.
