Gentle heart, loving spirit, Minnie Lou “Doshie” Golden Ellis, passed away on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, at the age of 91. Born in Montgomery, Alabama on March 9, 1934, and raised in Opelika until 19, Doshie grew up one of ten brothers and sisters.
Born prematurely to Virgil and Viola Golden, this tiny daughter entered the world small in size but immense in the ways that truly matter. The loving foundation of her family helped shape her generous heart. Throughout the years, she shared many cherished stories from her childhood growing up in Opelika with all of us.
After her marriage to the love of her life for more than 63 years, Harry Ellis, Harry and Doshie raised their three daughters in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, which became her lifetime home. Doshie also worked at South Central Bell/AT&T during that time, bridging her service from Opelika and Baton Rouge.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Harry; daughter, Stephanie; son-in Law, Ken Hebert; great grandchild, Hope Shearer; parents, Virgil and Viola Golden; and numerous siblings and family members in Opelika and Baton Rouge.
She is survived by her daughters, Susan Ball (Rick), Sandra Hebert; grandchildren, Lindsay Shearer (Rob), Justin Ball (Paige), Mark Hebert, Monica Ball; Great grandchildren, Chloe, Alyssa, Tyler and Aiden Shearer, Kensley Hebert; and brothers, Perry and Ronnie Golden of Opelika.
Doshie loved and treasured many things, but family always came first—especially raising her daughters. With genuine interest and encouragement, she stayed deeply involved in the lives of her daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She loved unconditionally, with strength, patience, and understanding. She devoted her life to making sure each of us was “OK.” Our family phone calls almost always began with her simple but heartfelt question: “Are you OK?” During the many quiet moments she shared with our Daddy, she cared for him with deep love and devotion throughout his long illness. She was always there for him—steadfast, present, and loving through all their years together.
Her favorite hobbies included reading, solving crossword puzzles, and playing her beloved game of Scrabble. She also enjoyed watching baseball and football, especially rooting for her favorite teams—the Atlanta Braves, LSU baseball and football, and Alabama and Auburn football—which brought her many happy moments. Mama loved nature... beautiful flowers, birds of all types, and butterflies. She told all her grandchildren, "When you see a yellow butterfly its Maw-Maw thinking of you!"
"Maw-Maw loves you!”
Doshie will be remembered most for her natural ability to keep family at the center of everything and for reminding us of the importance of staying close at heart, no matter how many miles may separate us.
Visitation will take place at Resthaven Funeral Home, 11817 Jefferson Hwy, Baton Rouge, Louisiana on Saturday, March 14, 2026, beginning at 9:00 AM until memorial services at 11:00 AM. Burial to follow at Resthaven Gardens of Memory
Romantic at heart, innocent in spirit, endlessly optimistic, unwavering in faith, and unconditional in love.
Wishing us all "A better day".
We will all love and miss her forever.
Rest in Peace with Daddy and Stephanie.
