Phyllis Newsom

July 12, 1939 — March 17, 2022

Phyllis, age 82, was called home by our Lord on March 17, 2022, in Mustang Oklahoma from natural causes. Phyllis was born on July 12, 1939, in New Orleans, Louisiana and graduated from Southeastern Lab High School Class of 1957. She attended Southeastern University and was a Lionette.  She worked for the State Dept. of Revenue until she met her love and surviving husband Charles “Sonny” Newsom Sr. of Baton Rouge.  They were married on July 7, 1959.  She and Sonny have three children.  She worked as a teacher’s aide at Glen Oaks, River Oaks, Tara and Central for several years.  Her passion and love centered around family and especially the annual Morrison Thanksgiving gathering of all families and friends.  These gatherings were a treasure that she looked forward to every year.  They made their home in Central until the flood of 2016, which unfortunately took their home.  They relocated in 2016 to Mustang, Oklahoma to be closer to their daughter and son in law.

Phyllis is survived by her devoted husband Charles “Sonny” William Newsom Sr., children; Charles “Jay” William Newsom Jr. and wife Jennine Fontenot Newsom, Michael Rawlins Newsom and wife Nancy Hudson Newsom, Patricia Kelly Clifton and husband Kevin Clifton.  Her grandchildren, Cody W. Newsom and wife Katy Newsom, Jonathan L. Newsom and wife Larkin Newsom, Amy M. Newsom and fiancé Tyler Sansone, D. Tyler Klein and wife Shelley Klein, Kyle H. Newsom, Mathew W. Lynch and wife Nicole Lynch, Jesse P. Lynch and wife Shideh R. Lynch, Zack Clifton and wife Erin Clifton, Kaleigh C. Allison and husband Matt Allison.  She is blessed with eighteen great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. She is survived by her siblings; Patricia "Tricia" Szieber and husband Alton, Julia Ann "Judy" Mathes and husband David, and Jeanne Morrison Adamson. She is also survived by her sisters in law, Fay Morrison and Marilyn Morrison as well as numerous nieces and nephews.  Preceded in death by her parents, Edward Chester Morrison and Ruth Eleanor Bankston Morrison; siblings; Edison "Boog" Morrison and wife Maxine Morrison, Lula Marie "Tee" Hershey and husband William Hershey, Ruth Roberta “Skay” Frazier and husband Art Frazier, Edward "Ed" Morrison, John "JL" Morrison and wife Janice Morrison, and Franklin "Frank" Morrison. Visitation and interment will both be at Resthaven Gardens of Memory and Funeral Home located at 11817 Jefferson Hwy, Baton Rouge.  Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation on March 24, 2022, starting at 9:00 a.m. until the funeral service begins at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow in the adjacent Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers the family has requested donations be made on her behalf to either St. Jude Children's Research Hospital “www.stjude.org” or the Alzheimer’s Association “www.alz.org”.
