Shirley Speeg Bougere passed away on Monday, May 8, 2023, at home with her husband of 52 years, Daniel Bougere, Sr. by her side. She was 72 years old.
Shirley was a resident of Zachary for 16 years. She was born in Fort Worth, Texas and her family moved to Metairie, Louisiana. She attended St. Mary Magdalen Elementary School and Chapelle High School in Metairie. She graduated from UNO with a degree in Education and later from Southeastern University with her master's degree. She also attended Catholic University in Washington, DC for two summers for her doctorate.
Shirley started teaching around 1971, at schools in Jefferson Parish. She moved to Covington, Louisiana and taught at St. Peters Elementary and then Pope John High School. She then became principal at St. Joseph Elementary in Ponchatoula and later principal at St. Alphonsus. She became assistant principal at Holy Family School in Port Allen and finished her career as the Director of the Special Ed School in Baton Rouge at the end of 2013.
Shirley is survived by her husband; her two children, Daniel Bougere Jr. and Michelle Bougere Hariel; and her two grandchildren, Keira Hariel and Zoey Hariel.
She is preceded in death by her mother and father, Davis and Virginia Speeg; and her two brothers, Raymond Speeg and Stephen Speeg.
Shirley was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She dedicated her life to teaching and to her family and friends. She will be greatly missed by all.
Family and friends are invited to attend the visitation and service at Resthaven Funeral Home, 11817 Jefferson Highway in Baton Rouge on Saturday, May 20, 2023. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. followed by services at 2:00 p.m. Burial will follow in Resthaven Gardens of Memory.
