Stanley Dwain Hickerson

November 15, 1946 — April 26, 2023

Stanley Dwain Hickerson died in the presence of family and friends at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital, on Wednesday, April 26, 2023.

Stan was born in Altus, Oklahoma, on November 15, 1946, the oldest child of Doris and Dwain Hickerson.  His family later moved to Phoenix, Arizona.  After graduating from Sunnyslope High School in 1965, Stan served his country as a member of the United States Army during the Vietnam Conflict where he was not only a brave soldier, but also a member of the Army basketball team.

In 1973, Stan married Marcia ‘Marty’ Pethtel.  They eventually settled down in Baton Rouge, but Stan would always remain a devoted Sooner fan. Together, Stan and Marty had one daughter, Kelly Dawn Hickerson.  Stan and Kelly both loved, cherished and were devoted to Marty’s care during her long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.

Stan had successful careers as a Golf Course Superintendent at both Baton Rouge Country Club and Country Club of Louisiana, before retiring and enjoying time with family and friends.  He took pride in overseeing the best golf courses wherever he went and inspired many of his employees to follow in his footsteps, becoming superintendents themselves.

Stan was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marty.  He is survived by his daughter, Kelly Hickerson; son-in-law, Emile Guirard; grandchildren, Ty Robin, Ella Robin, Sophie Guirard, and Isaac Guirard; brother, Gary Hickerson; his children, Holly Hickerson and Brian Hickerson; sister, Carol Timmons; her children Vicky Foster Miller and Dean Miller; dogs, Sadie and Rascal; and many other friends and relatives.

A private family service will be held at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Alzheimer’s Services of the Capital Area, Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
