Suzette Chauvin "Nana" Lowe

February 3, 1950 — October 20, 2025

Suzette Chauvin Lowe, lovingly known as “Nana” by her grandchildren, children, family and friends, passed away on Monday, October 20, 2025 in the care of Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge, LA. She was a loving wife, grandmother, mother, sister, and neighbor to so many people in her lifetime. She was a true servant leader and someone who spent her life caring for others.

Suzette was born on February 3, 1950 in New Roads, LA to Sidney and Lottie Belle “Manou” Chauvin and grew up in Erwinville, LA, one of five children in a modest upbringing amongst the sugarcane fields of West Baton Rouge Parish. Suzette went to Holy Family School in Port Allen, LA before graduating from Port Allen High School in 1968 where she was involved in many activities such as the Highsteppers, cheerleading, and Editor-in-Chief of the Pelicana. Suzette was named Miss Port Allen High School in 1968. While a freshman at Port Allen High School she met Jerry Thomas Lowe who became her high school sweetheart and eventually her husband for life.

Suzette went on to Our Lady of the Lake Nursing School in Baton Rouge, LA where she would graduate as a Registered Nurse in December 1970. While there she met many wonderful people who would become her fellow nurses and lifelong friends to her final day. Her love of taking care of people was instilled during her experiences in nursing school.

She and Jerry would marry shortly thereafter in January 1971 at Immaculate Conception Church in Lakeland, LA and settle in Baton Rouge, LA where they started their life together and would soon welcome three wonderful children whom they adored dearly. Suzette continued her nursing career working for Dr. James Hannie, a local pediatrician, as well as serving in many capacities as a Registered Nurse at Our Lady of the Lake. Suzette was very proud of the mission of Our Lady of the Lake and the friendships she developed while working alongside many nurses and doctors there, even to her last day where perhaps fittingly she was in the very hospital where she served others for so long.

Jerry and Suzette built their dream home on Sunbury Circle in the Kenilworth neighborhood of Baton Rouge, LA where they developed lifelong bonds with their neighbors. Suzette and Jerry loved working together in their yard earning the prestigious Kenilworth “Yard of the Month” many times. Suzette enjoyed the annual Holiday Lighting of the Luminaries in Kenilworth and took great pride in winning “Best Street” for Sunbury Circle and even “Best Door”. She was someone who respected tradition so much that she would later bring the same tradition to her next home later in life.

During the mid-1990s, Jerry and Suzette moved to the Woodgate neighborhood of Baton Rouge, LA where they would once again be blessed to have a wonderful set of neighbors. Many of these wonderful people would become lifelong friends and especially important in providing support to Suzette for the nine years following Jerry’s death.

Suzette’s biggest role in life was that of grandmother, where she naturally thrived as a caretaker and loving “Nana”. She would do absolutely anything for her grandchildren. She attended every event possible, even if in Alabama or Texas, and prioritized her grandchildren above anything else in the world. She would make sure they always had a snack, got a card in the mail for every holiday, and were always celebrated. Her love for children extended to their friends as well and especially to the children in Woodgate who would come over and visit for a piece of candy, but known to them as a “top secret.”

Suzette was a servant leader in life and always full of energy for taking care of others. She enjoyed volunteering in many capacities at school events for her children such as working in the nurse’s station or mother’s club. She gave allergy shots to countless children and pierced many ears in her days, as these traumatic events to children were soothed by Suzette’s calming and loving presence. Suzette enjoyed serving weekly the hungry alongside her friends and the nuns of the Missionaries of Charity at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Baton Rouge, LA.

Suzette was a gifted gardener who always kept an immaculate yard. She enjoyed reading and working crossword puzzles every day. Suzette had a wonderful skill of writing a note on every picture or item she could as she cherished every little thing that came into her life. She loved to travel, especially the annual beach trip with her grandkids and a recent visit to Japan to visit her oldest grandson who is serving in the U.S. Navy. She loved playing Mahjong, long walks with her friends, and frequent lunches with her sisters-in-law. She always had a rosary in hand or nearby and cherished attending Mass with her sister.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Jerry Thomas Lowe, the true love of her life who passed away in 2016. She is survived by her three children, Bradley Lowe of Baton Rouge, LA and wife Peggy, Courtney Ydarraga of Hoover, AL, and Natalie Lowe of Dallas, TX; and seven grandchildren (Cameron Ydarraga, William Ydarraga, Thomas Lowe, Tate Lowe, Parker DeLisa, Collier Lowe, and Winston DeLisa).

Suzette is survived by one sibling, Johnnie Belle Chauvin Flynn of Baton Rouge, LA; preceded in death by her two sisters Faye Chauvin Moore and Linda Ann Chauvin “Lovie” Hicks, and her brother Sidney T. Chauvin. She had an immense love for her siblings and would do anything for them all. She is survived by brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law (Steve Hicks of Baton Rouge, LA; Terry and Gail Lowe of Baton Rouge, LA; Gregory and Cindy Lowe of Port Allen, LA; Bo and Ginger Altazan of Baton Rouge, LA; and David and Jill Saale of Port Allen, LA). She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews all of whom she loved dearly.

Suzette is preceded in death by her parents. She is also preceded in death by her beloved grandson, Henry Thomas Lowe, whom she will lay in rest alongside.
