Phaolô Maria Nguyễn Thanh

July 19, 1932 — October 16, 2023

Thanh Nguyễn, son of Quý Nguyễn and Quí Thị Hồ, passed away peacefully in his home in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on October 16, 2023 at the age of 91. He is survived by his wife TuyếtHồng Thị Bùi, children Tuấn Anh Nguyễn (Lan Bích Hứa), Sơn Anh Nguyễn (AnhĐào Thị Trần), HồngLan Thị Nguyễn (Joseph Tiến Đức Nguyễn), Tiến Anh Nguyễn, Vinh Anh Nguyễn (HoàiNam Thị Trần), HồngAnh Thị Nguyễn, and HồngTrâm Thị Nguyễn Smith (Russell Wade Smith), grandchildren VyVân Nguyễn, Ann Lan Phương Nguyễn, Jenny AnhThy Nguyễn, Alvin Anhuy Nguyễn, and Christopher Khoa Anh Nguyễn, and sister Vựng Thị Nguyễn. As well as several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Tịnh Nguyễn, and half-sister Hòài Thị Nguyễn.

Thanh Nguyễn was born on July 19, 1932 in Đơn Sa, Quảng Bình, Vietnam. After losing his father at an early age and the division of Vietnam in 1954, he was left in Saigon on his own. Through his perseverance, he was able to advance in his education and ultimately graduate from Học Viện Quốc Gia Hành Chánh (the National Academy of Public Administration). When the Vietnam War broke out, he joined the Southern Vietnamese army serving under multiple branches, including U.S. Special Forces, and rose to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. Following the Fall of Saigon, Thanh was forced into a “re-education” camp, where he was pushed to the brink of death, for over a decade. Yet he still managed to support his family and regain his health against all odds.

In 1993, Thanh brought his family to the United States to establish a fruitful life in Louisiana. Starting from the bottom, he worked tirelessly to support his children through college and beyond. He always remained a fiercely devout Catholic, curious learner, and aspirational person — a spirit that he has instilled in his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed playing mandolin, reading, and socio-political discourse, but nothing could ever compare to his great love for and dedication to God and his family, who miss him dearly and will all forever carry him with us in our hearts.
