Velma Fischer

November 29, 1927 — April 3, 2021

Velma Lee Day Fischer joyfully met her Lord and Savior face to face on Saturday, April 3rd, at the age of 93 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, at Landmark of Baton Rouge Skilled Nursing Facility.

Velma was born in Jackson, LA, on November 29, 1927, the second of four children born to Tolar and Emma Day. She graduated in 1945 from Istrouma High School, and began working in the Finance Office for the City of Baton Rouge.

In her office one day, she met a smiling young soldier man named Culver who swept her off her feet. As soon as he completed his next tour of duty they were married on October 3, 1962. Later they became charter members of Immanuel Baptist Church in Baton Rouge, where Velma faithfully taught children’s Sunday school for 30 years. Culver was a loving and devoted husband for 46 ½ years until the Lord took him home.

Velma’s favorite verse is John 3:16: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

Velma is survived by her daughter and son in law, Sharon & Wade Sigrest of Cebu City, Philippines; grandson and wife, Brian and Jodie Sigrest; and granddaughter and husband, Autumn and John Trout; a sister, Maud Day of Baton Rouge, LA and nieces and nephews.

Velma is preceded in death by her husband, Culver Lee Fischer; her son Thomas Daniel Fischer; her sister Emma Bell Day; her brother and sister-in-law Archie and Jeri Day, Sr.; her parents Tolar & Emma Day; and her grandparents William and Josephine Day.

Visitation is at Resthaven Gardens of Memory & Funeral Home on Friday, April 9, 2021 from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM followed by the service celebrating Velma’s life. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memorial Gardens. Service to be conducted by Rev. Malcolm Richard, a dear and longtime family friend.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home at 7200 Desiard St., Monroe, LA 71203.
