Vernon Leroy Strickland, of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, passed away on Monday, July 3, 2023, at the age of 92. He was born on Thursday, June 11, 1931, in Kentwood, Louisiana, the son of the late James and Janie Venable Strickland. He played football throughout his high school career as a member of the Kentwood Kangaroos. Vernon proudly served our country in the United States Army. He retired from the State of Louisiana after dedicating years working in the retirement system (LASERS).
Vernon’s love of the outdoors started at a young age, when he would spend time at his parents’ farm, where he was born and raised. He loved living the country life where he helped take care of their chickens and cows. He enjoyed fishing and hunting, and was always great at bowling, later joining the senior bowling league at All Star Lanes in Baton Rouge.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife of over 60 years, Shirley Ginn Strickland; his sister, Aline Strickland Garner; and his brother Wilbur Strickland. Vernon is survived by his daughter, Dawn Strickland; his son, Paul Strickland; and his sister, Edith Caillouet of Houma, Louisiana; as well as numerous other loving family and friends.
Vernon made friends wherever he went. He was always there for anyone in need and his laugh could fill a room when sharing one of his many funny stories.
