Anthony “Tony” Edward Barbara, husband to Catherine Bonin Barbara, passed peacefully on Friday, November 12, 2021 at the age of 70, after a short battle with bladder cancer.
He was born in 1951 in New Orleans, LA to Anthony Charles Barbara and Nettie Barnum Barbara, who both preceded him in death. Tony attended and graduated from East Jefferson High School in 1969, where he discovered his love of music and learned to play various instruments. At EJHS, he was a member of TKΩ fraternity and gained lifelong friendships through the organization. He was an athlete through his life and excelled in baseball, boxing, bodybuilding, and cycling. He was a loyal Saints fan and cheered loudly for them whether they were winning or losing. He enjoyed woodworking as both a profession and hobby and loved seeing pieces come back to life with his tender loving care. His happy place was hunting with friends and family, although he rarely came back with any spoils from those ventures. He used his musical gifts to service in the St. Patrick Church choir, where he sang bass and played several musical instruments for many years.
He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Catherine Bonin Barbara; daughters, Christina Barbara Albarracin and Angela Barbara-Mauldin and husband Jarrod, in whom he took great pride; 4 beautiful grandchildren, Ella Albarracin, Kaden Barbara, Kyla Mauldin, and Colton Mauldin, who knew him as “Pops;” brothers, Bart Barbara and wife Kathy, Jody Barbara and wife Jackie, Ricky Barbara, and Randy Barbara; and an extended family including numerous in-laws, cousins, nieces, nibling, and nephews.
During the last few months of his life, he was under the care of doctors and staff from East Jefferson General Hospital and the Yenni Treatment Center. He received compassionate care from the wonderful doctors, nurses, and other support staff. Tony and his family would like to thank them for their loving care, attention, and skill.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 17, 2021, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 12424 Brogdon Lane, Baton Rouge, LA 70816, from 10:00 a.m. until Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. with a Second Line Jazz Funeral procession leading to the reception at St. Patrick Church Family Center.
In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer to honor Tony’s passions by donating to Catholic Charities of Baton Rouge, The Roots of Music of New Orleans, or by making a blood donation at any of your local blood banks.
