Obituary

WASCOM, JEAN BROWNE

Passed away Thursday evening, 15 July 2021, at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center (Baton Rouge).

She was 89, a native of New Orleans (LA) and longtime resident of Baton Rouge, most recently St. James Place.

She was a 1949 graduate of Francis T. Nicholls High School, where she was named Poet Laureate after winning the school poetry contest; Southeastern Louisiana College [University], B.A., 1953; and pursued graduate work at LSU.

While at Southeastern she was listed in Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities.

She was a retired English teacher who spent her entire career in East Baton Rouge public schools: Zachary High School, 1953-1955; Istrouma Junior High, 1956-1980; and Broadmoor High School, 1981 to her retirement in 1986.

Survived by son, Michael David Wascom; daughter, Shelley Wascom; sister-in-law, Margaret Soskin; nieces, Kristy McGovern (John), Ellen Tadman (Andy), Debbie Naughton (Corey), Dr. Rebecca Hicks (Michael), and Susan Sharkey (Casey); nephew,Scott Colomb (Lisa); and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.

Preceded in death by husband, Raymond Lea Wascom, with whom she would have celebrated their 70th anniversary on July 21st.; parents, Lorenzo N. and May Browne; brother, David Newman Browne; father- and mother-in-law, John "Pinder" and Elizabeth Wascom; and sister-in-law, Kathryn Colomb.

Visitation will be at Ingleside United Methodist Church, 4264 Capital Heights Avenue, Baton Rouge, 70806, Saturday, 24 July 2021, 9 to 11 am; followed immediately by service, conducted by Rev. Lewis Morris. A graveside service will be conducted at Resthaven Gardens of Memory, 2 pm, followed by interment. (No funeral procession.)

Her two favorite activities were reading and traveling. She could always be seen with a book, and managed to visit all 50 states and about 30 foreign countries.

She was also an inveterate cat lover who collected an enormous menagerie of stuffed cats.

She was a longtime active member of Ingleside United Methodist Church, Alpha Delta Kappa (ADK) teachers sorority, and American Association of University Women (AAUW); and was active in Baton Rouge area Retired Teachers Assn.

 In lieu of flowers, donations preferred to Ingleside United Methodist Church.
