“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith” 2 Timothy4:7
Robert “Gene” Scoggins peacefully passed away at his home on Easter Sunday, April 17, 2022, surrounded by his family and the loved they shared. Gene was born and raised in Jackson, Mississippi and graduated from Provine High School in 1960. He then attended Mississippi State University where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. Following his college education, Gene became a naval aviator and later retired as a Lieutenant Commander from the Navy. Gene has been a long time resident of Baton Rouge, La., and had an extensive career at Exxon Mobile where he worked as an engineer until he retired.
Gene is preceded in death by his parents, country singer Burlon Daniel “Slim” Scoggins, Florence Lenora Winters Scoggins of Clinton, MS., and his brother Jerry Dwayne Scoggins of Emerald Isle, NC.
Gene is survived by his loving wife, Donna Naul Scoggins, dedicated daughter Leigh Ann Texada, his son-in-law, James “Buddy” Texada, step-son Allen Aker, and daughter-in-law Ginna Aker. Gene was a devoted and loving Grandfather to Mallorie, Mollie, Margaret, Michael, Austin, Grace and Elise. He is also survived by his brother, Jimmy Scoggins of Clinton, Ms and a son John Scoggins and his family.
Gene lived life to the fullest and had a strong passionate personality. Gene was a family man and loved his family with every ounce of his being. He was quick to crack a joke, enjoyed spending time playing with his dogs, attending his grandchildren’s events, or planning the next family vacation. He would spend an afternoon catching fish, repairing a car or lawn mower for a friend or someone in need, or spend the day in his yard. He was an avid sports player and never missed an opportunity to visit with friends (and strangers) telling war stories of his days flying planes off aircraft carriers during his time in the Navy. Gene was also a die hard “Big Foot” believer, although he would not readily admit this. Gene was an active member of Broadmoor Baptist church, where everyone knew him from collecting Wednesday night dinner money, for over thirty-five years. Gene was a man of faith and had a servant’s heart. Unfortunately, Gene’s body finally succumbed to cancer but his mind and his spirit never did. He refused to loose his sense of humor, quick wit, or his zest for life and could put a smile on your face despite his own circumstances. Gene was a man of honor and great character; his spirit lives on through his children and grandchildren.
Visitation will be held in his honor at Broadmoor Baptist Church, 9755 Goodwood Blvd, Baton Rouge, La., Thursday, April 21 2022 from 9:00am until 10:00am with services immediately following. There will be a gravesite procession to Resthaven Funeral Home, 11817 Old Jefferson Hwy, Baton Rouge, La. He will be laid to rest with military honors from the Navy.
